Have you ever tried using chalkboard paint? I confess, I have only done one other project using chalkboard paint and it was on a much smaller scale. Last year I made cute little coffee mugs for a girls trip with my high school pals (Debbie, Kris, Ann that’s you!). I used the spray version and wrote our names on each one. I’m sure you’ve noticed that there are so many great chalkboard paint ideas out there. Easy to make a menu or sign for a business. I’ve noticed that blackboards are making a big come-back in classrooms as well. Kids are having fun at pre-schools and kinder classes.
This is our pantry door. It is long and skinny with a long sort of panel down the middle. I usually put up the girls art on this door. It’s in a skinny hallway to the kitchen so it’s a bit tricky to take a photo of it.
I only have two things I’ll need to paint the pantry door with chalkboard paint so far – some painters tape and a brush…my brush may be a bit too small.
What do YOU already have?
So that’s where I am so far. Time to get dressed (yup, still in my pjs!), get younger gal to dance rehearsal, and hit the hardware store. I hope to pick up a can of black chalkboard paint and a bigger paint brush. Chalkboard paint does come in other colors – I’ve seen it in green. I like the black personally. I think chalk shows up better on it and it just reminds me of the good old days when WE actually had chalkboards in our classrooms for teachers to use!
I will add to this blog as I work along today. I’ll put up pic’s of each step. My goal is to get two coats of paint up today so that we can play with our new chalk door tomorrow on Mother’s Day!
…I’m back from the store. Picked up a can of black chalkboard paint ($9.67 at our Home Depot), 2 little paint sponges (under a buck each) and a paint roller. Here is a photo of what I got from Home Depot.
WE’RE READY!!
I decided to use the paint roller since it went on smoother than using the brush I have. The brush would leave lots of lines and grooves in the chalkboard paint and I’m trying to avoid that! The paint sponges worked well for the edges and corners. Here’s a picture of me using a paint sponge on the edge (photo creds to our younger gal, thanks Aves!)
GET TO WORK!!!
Our older daughter filmed a quick video tutorial showing exactly how I painted on the first coat of chalkboard paint – thanks Ley! Here’s the video:
The paint can instructs to wait 4 hours in between coats. I don’t think I can wait that long, sorry folks. Plus my rolled on layer looks quite thin to me and so I’m making the executive decision to only give it a couple hours until my 2nd coat. In the meanwhile, I’ve washed my roller and my paint sponge and I’m going to take our anxious dog, Oscar for a walk. It’s a pretty day out there! Remember to take breaks and get outside when you can. Here’s a pictures of our Oskie (short for Oscar that is):
CUTENESS BREAK –
Back from walk, ahhh, that was great. Got the 2nd coat of the black chalkboard paint onto the pantry door. As I mentioned, the roller worked well to get a quick First coat on but this round, the roller made the paint sort of chunky. So I switched over to the paint sponge. The sponge helped the paint go on super smoothly. Here is a photo of
my new best friend:
An old and dear friend of mine (we go back to 4th grade!) just told me my domain name sounds like Funk Itch! Oh no! My funk does not itch, lol! Oh well, I like Fun Kitch so I’m keeping it. Hope I don’t scare anyone off, ha.
Here is what the pantry door looks like with the 2nd coat of paint on it.
ALMOST DONE!
That’s it! It was super easy! If I can do it you can! Just going to let it dry over night and who knows, I might just have some special greetings waiting for me in the morning 🙂
Thanks for reading and I hope you try to paint your own chalkboard door soon! If you do be sure to leave a comment and let me know how it went.
Couple final notes – I did not follow all the directions on the paint can, oh dear! But I think it will be fine. For example, I did not sand the door first, also I did not wait the full 4 hours between coats. Lastly, it says to wait 36 hours before using it/ writing on it with chalk and I can tell you that is not going to happen in this house.
Have fun and I hope I have inspired you or at least made you laugh. x/o Bita
